33% of British Adults obese by 2010 A British government report states that 12 million adults in the UK will be obese by 2010. The study also covered childhood obesity. The report states that 20% of British children will be obese by the same date.
Prime Minister Tony Blair said a new fitness strategy was urgently needed so his government now has a Minister of Fitness whose goal is to combat obesity. Other ideas like banning junk food advertising during prime time television hours are also being discussed.

Facing the fat facts
- Over half the UK population is either overweight or obese, in 2002 70% of men, and 63% of women
- One in five adults are obese
- Obesity in 2-4 year old children almost doubled from 5%-9% from 1989-1998, and in 6-15-year-olds trebled from 5%-16% between 1990-2001
- Only a quarter of young people admitted to doing the recommended hour of activity every day
- Overweight young people have a 50% chance of being overweight adults
- Children of overweight parents have twice the risk of being overweight compared to those with healthy weight parents.
